Speech-Language Pathology, also known simply as “Speech Therapy,” is work completed
by a Speech-Language Pathologist who is a highly trained professional in the techniques,
strategies, and interventions designed to improve or correct communication disorders.
Communication disorders include disorders of speech (how we talk), language (how we use
and understand language), and swallowing. The Speech-Language Pathologist is the
professional who engages in clinical services, prevention, advocacy, education,
administration, research, in the areas of communication and swallowing across the
lifespan, infancy through geriatrics. The overall objective of speech therapy services is to
optimize individuals’ ability to communicate and swallow, and in turn, improve quality of life.
